Today, we’re going to talk about Facebook and how you can start using it to improve your career as a financial professional. I’m sure most of you—if not all—are familiar with Facebook and its wondrous ability to connect friends, family, acquaintances, and, well, complete strangers, but you may not be as familiar with the value Facebook can offer your business. With a few simple steps outlined in this post, you can start building your online brand and engaging with current and potential customers.

The first step to creating a Facebook page is the same step you need to take for any other type of external communication for your business: check with compliance. It’s important you familiarize yourself with the proper protocol so you can avoid mishaps and potential fines.

Next, you need to have a Facebook profile for yourself (however unlikely it is you don’t already have one) before you can make a business page. Facebook would love nothing more than to have you on their network, so they make this process as simple as possible.

If you’ve already sold your soul to Facebook and you’re ready to create your company page, start by going to facebook.com/business and selecting ‘Create a Page.’ Follow the onscreen prompts to get rolling.

Creating your page

One of the most important aspects to your company page are the photos. You’ll want to add photos that are consistent with your brand and are easily identifiable with your business. Your profile photo will be visible with search results and when you interact with users, so you’ll want to make it so that it is easily recognizable, such as a logo or your face. Your cover photo, however, will be the centerpiece of the page and should somehow convey your brand and culture.

At this point you should get acquainted with your page. Facebook will have a short walkthrough of all the features that may come in handy in the future.

Next, you should compose your short description and choose your username. For your short description, you have a limit of 155 characters, so you should try to explain your business as concisely as possible. Your username is how people will find your page, so you should make it short and easy to remember.

The most important part of your page is the About section. This section should include all the basic information concerning your business, such as your contact information, a link to your website, hours, and any other essentials regarding your business. This is also your opportunity to add a more detailed description of your practice and to outline the types of financial services and products that differentiates you from others.

While having an online page where users can learn more about your practice is important, it’s only half the benefit of starting a Facebook page. The other half is actually posting and engaging with your market, which we’ll dive into next time.
